Is Plainfield, IN a Good Place to Live? A Local's Guide
Yes — Plainfield is one of the best-balanced towns in Hendricks County for families and commuters, thanks to newer housing, Plainfield Community School Corporation and a 20-minute drive to downtown Indianapolis. It is less suited to buyers who want acreage or a historic home.

Who Plainfield is right for
Plainfield fits buyers who want a newer home, short interstate and airport access, and amenities inside town limits. If your must-have list includes a three-car garage, a finished basement and a subdivision built after 2000, Plainfield probably has it in inventory right now.
It is a weaker fit if you want several acres, a pre-1940 home with original character, or a rural setting. For those, look at Danville or Coatesville instead.
Commute times from Plainfield
Plainfield's location on the I-70 corridor is its strongest practical advantage.
- Downtown Indianapolis: 20–25 minutes via I-70
- Indianapolis International Airport: about 12 minutes
- Avon retail and IU Health West: 12–15 minutes
- Northwest side (86th Street corridor): 30–35 minutes
Schools and family life
Plainfield Community School Corporation is the reason most families I work with shortlist the town. Beyond academics, the performing arts facilities and career-technical programs come up repeatedly in conversations with parents relocating from out of state.
Outside school, Splash Island and the Vandalia Trail carry an unusual amount of the town's family life for a community this size.
What homes cost in Plainfield
Plainfield's median sale price sits in the middle of the Hendricks County range — above Danville and Coatesville, roughly comparable to Avon, and below Brownsburg and Zionsville. Because I pull live MLS data rather than relying on national estimate tools, the fastest way to get an accurate figure is to request this month's Plainfield market snapshot.
